Many of us wish to become more involved in our community and contribute to making the world a better place. Choosing to perform acts of community service is not just about being a good person; it helps you build authentic connections, overcome the illusion of isolation, and create a community that you are genuinely a part of. Acts of service build the community that so many of us are missing in our daily lives and often lead to a personal sense of growth and fulfillment. These actions extend beyond ourselves, providing help to those who need it most, or simply bringing a smile to someone’s face.
When we think of community service or volunteer work, we often think of direct service. Direct services are actions you can see take place in front of you and often require long-term commitment. These traditional acts of service/charity are generally the most recognized by our communities, and they might look like…
- Hospital volunteering
- Contributing to food banks
- Tutoring young students
- Volunteering at animal shelters
- Helping at senior centres
- Organizing fundraisers
- Leading outreach programs
- Regularly donating money to charity
However, many of us struggle to find the time or energy to commit to long-term volunteer work, nor do we always have the extra cash to consistently donate to local charities. While giving back to the environment and to the people around you is crucial for our physical and mental well-being, it also puts us at risk of overextending ourselves to such an extent that we aren’t really helping anyone. Of course, the acts of community service listed above are amazing and can change lives in profound ways… but our everyday schedules don’t often allow us to give back as much as we’d like.
Instead, I invite you to look for things you can do within your own neighbourhood, or even from the comfort of your own home, that only take a moment of your time but help out in big ways—moments that can lead to permanent change. These are simple acts of charity and community service that require minimal effort but make a big difference. In fact, you can do some of simplest acts from your phone right now!
Here is a list of some of the different acts of community service or charity you can do in 7 minutes…
Creative Contributions
One type of community service that often goes unrecognized: the simple creative contributions you can make to help out.

Some types of creative contributions you can try are…
- Write thank you notes. Is there someone in your community who is especially helpful or kind? Maybe it’s your bus driver, or your delivery man, or your crossing guard. Writing short but meaningful thank you notes don’t only create closer ties between you and your community, but this small act of kindness can really make someone’s day—or week—a whole lot better.
- Reshare a local business or leave positive reviews on their page. Small businesses, especially those run by the people who live around you, are vital for small communities. Leaving a good review for a recent restaurant, café, or bookstore you’ve visited makes a positive impact on the everyday people who run those places. Not only will you be supporting your community, but it’s also a great way to use your phone towards something positive. Instead of doomscrolling, we can make changes for the better!
- Create educational content inspired by your work, schooling, or hobbies. Sharing wisdom is important to keep a community united. This content can be anything from making quick videos on how to change a car tire to writing down your favourite easy-to-make recipes to share with friends and family.
- Make awareness posts on your social media. These posts can be climate awareness campaigns, mental health advocacy, cultural awareness initiatives, equal rights advocacy, or any other topic that you’re passionate about. By sharing these posts, you raise awareness of important conversations and help people and other communities you may not even know about. Awareness leads to action.
Even better, if you know of any local volunteer groups or community organizations in your area, you can offer to help them by putting your extra time and technology skills to use. You can volunteer whenever you can to design community posters for their important news, or offer to post pictures from their events that you have attended on their social media. Now, this effort does go beyond a simple seven minutes, but it’s a way to contribute an hour or two of your time every few weeks, without overwhelming your schedule.
Invisible Acts
Not all acts of community service get the recognition they deserve, but they still contribute to your community in big ways. Another kind of contribution you can make: invisible acts of community service, some of which you can try out today! You can complete these acts no matter who you are or where in the world you live, and are perfect for people who might be a little more shy.
- Check out a book from your local library. Libraries provide safe spaces and free educational materials for the people who need them the most. By using your local library, or even by signing up for a library card, you are supporting your community in a way that is often overlooked by those who are fortunate enough not to need their local library. Proving that there is still a demand for libraries ensures that they continue to exist and help others.

2. Pick up litter. This could be done around your house, your local bus stop, or just down your street. Even five minutes spent tidying up a patch of grass can make your neighbourhood a safer place and a more environmentally-friendly space.
3. Make sure you’re not using electricity or water unnecessarily. Not only is this good for the environment, but it can also help you keep costs down. Make sure that your lights are switched off in the rooms you aren’t using. Unplug cords that aren’t attached to electronics in use. Try to shorten your shower time, or make sure to turn off the taps while you brush your teeth or wash your hands.
